Jack's Story

I am humbled by the growth I have seen and experienced at Steenhof Building Services Group. Success has not come without its challenges, trials, and risks. Here is my story:

In the mid 1980’s, I opened my own engineering firm in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. During this time, I provided services almost exclusively to the surrounding northern communities, many of which were only accessible by float plane or gravel runways. I found enjoyment when facing the unique challenges that came with the remoteness and cold climate of this region.

In 1999, I relocated with my family to the Orillia area to pursue a new opportunity to provide engineering services in Central Ontario. Being less than 90 minutes from the Greater Toronto Area and just a short 30 minute drive from Muskoka and the shores of Georgian Bay, I knew Orillia was a prime location. Not to mention, I fell in love with its small town charm and knew this would be a great place to raise my family.

Throughout the years to follow, I was hungry to advance our company through the groundbreaking, innovative avenues within the industry.

In 2009, The Feed-In Tariff (FIT) Program was developed to encourage and promote greater use of renewable energy sources for electricity generating projects in Ontario. Most people were skeptical and failed to see the potential of this program. My intuition knew better. With the support of the team at SBSG, we dedicated over half of our business to this industry. I am proud to say we have now provided services for thousands of renewable energy projects and are considered to be one of the leading renewable engineering firms in the province.

My inquisitive nature led me next to the manufactured build industry and got us to be the preferred engineering firm for the top modular manufacturers throughout Canada and the United States. Seeing this industry grow exponentially; I continued to pursue various business opportunities and am now part owner of North America’s 1st shipping container hotel.

Looking back on the past 30 years, I can see how my willingness to adapt to an everchanging market and desire to explore new endeavors has been a driving force behind where SBSG is today. I am grateful for our past successes and look forward to the new opportunities that 2019 will bring for the SBSG team.
